Ch. 5
Remus woke up in Roman's room. He was immediately alarmed, figuring he accidentally sleepwalked or something.
The events of the past few days came back to him and he groaned, covering his face.
This was supposed to be a simple mission. Figure out who was bothering Roman and take them out. He didn't expect it to effect him like this.
He sat up, immediately spotting Roman snuggled up in a sleeping bag on the floor.
The prince insisted that Remus take the bed. Remus took it immediately, not hesitating whatsoever.
Suddenly, a knock on the door was heard.
Remus' eyes widened when he saw Roman stir. "No!" He whispered harshly. He tiptoed over to his brother and gently lifted up his head.
Remus swayed Roman's head back and forth, while he listened to whoever was on the other side of the door.
"Roman?" An analytical voice asked. Remus groaned quietly, he really wasn't in the mood to talk to the nerd. "You've been in there all day, are you alright?"
Remus glanced at Roman's grandfather clock. It was 6 p.m. Remus fell asleep around 10:30 a.m.
Fuck.
Remus glanced down at Roman, who was off in dream land yet again. Remus sighed and gently layed his head back down.
He quietly walked over to the door and opened it just enough so Logan wouldn't see Roman.
Logan's eyebrows instantly furrowed upon seeing him. "You look...exhausted." Logan mumbled. "Have you been crying?"
Remus figured his eyes were probably red, since he had a mental breakdown earlier. And of course he looked tired, he just woke up.
"I was napping." Remus muttered, rubbing at his eyes. Logan's expression relaxed as he nodded.
"For eight hours?" Logan asked.
"What's it to you?" Remus mumbled. He stiffened slightly when he realized that was so unlike his brother.
Logan rose a brow. "I'm concerned, long naps usually mean you're either experiencing sleep deprivation or sleep apnea. Is something wrong?"
Remus opened his mouth to reject those thoughts.
"Is it Remus?"
Now, it wasn't unusual to think the embodiment of intrusive thoughts was responsible for nightmares. Hell, if Remus was Logan he'd probably think it was him too. So why did Remus feel so hurt that they immediately assumed it was him?
Remus pursed his lips. "No, nothing's wrong. I'm fine." He said. "Is that all?"
"Well--"
"Fantastic. Bye." Remus shut the door in Logan's face. He was going to slam it, but his brother was asleep still.
Remus thought about what Logan said.
Long naps were a sign of sleep deprivation or sleep apnea.
So why is Roman napping so long too?
---
Logan was annoyed when Roman abruptly ended their conversation before hearing him out. He was annoyed, yes, but that annoyance was outweighed by concern.
Roman was an airhead, that much Logan knew, but Roman would never shut the door on another person.
He still had basic decency.
Roman didn't even let Logan see inside his room, which in itself set red flags off in Logan's head. Roman never passed up an opportunity to show off a creation of his. It was in his narcissistic nature.
Something was definitely up, and Logan would get to the bottom of it.
Patton had brushed off Roman's behavior after movie night, it was understandable. He seemed relatively normal compared to how he was acting previously.
But something was just...peculiar.
He talked differently, sure he still spoke in those long unnecessary sentences but the tone of his voice just made it sound off.
He walked differently. Roman would usually walk with his chest puffed out and his arms swinging like he was the most confident side in the mind palace.
Which he was, so it made sense.
The way he walked now is similar, chest puffed out, arms swinging, but his steps are shakier. Less like a prince and more like a drunkard.
And finally, his presence. All sides naturally give off an aura. In order for the viewers to experience what it is like, Thomas gives each side a theme song to give their dialogue more life.
Roman always had a regal and confident aura surrounding him, like a knight or, well, a prince.
Now, he still maintained the regal and confident aura, but it was off. Ever so slightly. You wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it, but his aura is darker. By just a hair.
It seemed less like Roman and more like someone trying to impersonate him.
Logan furrowed his brow. "Deceit!" He yelled abruptly while he entered the common room. Virgil, who had been sitting on the couch, jumped.
Deceit appeared.
He looked terrible, to say the least.
His bowler hat was gone, his outfit was wrinkly, his hair was a mess, and his eyes were red a puffy.
"What?" He hissed. "Please, enlighten me on why you so politely ripped me from my daily life to bring me to your ever so delightful home."
"Are...you okay?" Virgil asked reluctantly.
Deceit sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
Lie of omission.
"Great, you're here. Stay right there." Logan nodded firmly. "Roman!"
Roman rose up, a charming smile on his face. "You called?" He asked, before freezing at the sight of Deceit. "Oh, Deceit, hi."
"Yes, hi." Deceit sighed. He didn't seem all that focused on Roman, looking at Logan with pleading eyes. "Can I go now?"
Logan looked between the two in confusion.
As far as Logan knew, Deceit was the only side who could change into other sides. So the only solution for Roman's dark aura would be Deceit, right?
So what the hell?
"Very well." Logan mumbled. Deceit sunk out, a relieved sigh escaping his lips. Logan turned to Roman, who was staring at the spot Deceit was previously standing in. "Roman."
He snapped his head up. "What is it, nerd?" He asked.
"Are you okay?" Logan asked. Virgil, who had gone back to looking at his phone, looked up, paying attention to the conversation.
"I am dandy, Randy! Cheery as a cherry tree! Pretty as a peach!" He exclaimed, smirking slightly. "Why?"
"No reason." Logan shrugged. "Just making sure." He narrowed his eyes slightly, analyzing Roman's face.
"Well, if that's all you wanted, then I shall be off! Dragons and witches to slay,"
"Dragon witch." Virgil corrected. "Shit, sorry, habit." Virgil turned pink and looked at his shoes. "Wait, how did you mess that up, Ro?"
"Simply making sure you've been actually paying attention to me, Doctor Gloom." Roman replied easily. "Farewell friends!" He sunk out.
"Why would he think we weren't paying attention?" Virgil murmured, furrowing his brow and looking back at his phone.
"May I ask why it is a 'habit' to correct people when they refer to Roman's beast as a dragon and a witch?" Logan asked.
"Patton keeps calling her that and I just started correcting it after awhile." Virgil shrugged. "Thinking back on it, Roman made that mistake before. It was right after he got home from his quest."
"I recall, he didn't want to cut the chicken because he had been fighting 'dragons and witches all day'." Logan hummed.
"Why did you need Deceit and Roman?" Virgil asked curiously.
"I was testing a hypothesis." Logan frowned, reminded why he came back up here. "I was incorrect." He walked away, leaving a confused Virgil behind
