Pennsylvania
Y/N had a very simple life.
A simple life that she loved.
Every morning she would help her mother amd Jake outside with the laundry.
One night, Y/N heard something. She sat up in bed and looked at Jake. He had sat up in his bed too.
They sat.
They listened.
Jake told Y/N that he wanted to go check what it was. Y/N told him no. It would be safer for them to act like they were asleep.
"Y/N, I'm the man of the house."
"Jake that has nothing to do with this. They could have a gun!"
"They don't have a gun." Jake dismissed her worries, already putting on his slippers.
"Jake please, stop."
"Y/N, it's probably nothing."
"Jake,"
"You don't need to worry. It's pretty sweet that you do though."
"Of course I worry, you ass!"
"There's the Y/N, I know."
Jake opened their bedroom door and peered into the hallway.
"I don't see anything."
A large creak rumbled through the house.
"Maybe we should get mom." Y/N said, "I don't think anyone is breaking in but something could be wrong with the house."
"Mom just finished paying off this place. If she found out something was wrong with it-"
Another rumble.
"Is it an earthquake? We should probably wake her up, Jake!"
"That is if she isn't awake already."
The house began to shake and the tremors started. Jake and Y/N fell to their knees, wobbling about. Y/N was able to get a grip along the siding and started going towards her moms room. He mother was curled up in bed, in her own little world.
"Mom!"
"What is it, Y/N?" Her mothers speech was drowsy and slow.
"Mom." Y/N could smell the alcohol, "Mom we have to go."
"No. I don't have to go anywhere."
"Come on, I'll help you get on your slippers." Y/N looked for the cotton pink slippers she had given mom last christmas.
"I don't want to go, Y/N."
The scaffolding holding up the ceiling bit by bit started go come down.
"We don't have a choice. There's an earthquake. You could die! Don't you understand!"
"No, you don't understand! I don't want to leave."
"You're saying that because you're drunk!"
"I am wide awake! This is my time to go."
"Mom- no, no, no. Come on, give me your feet, we have to get your shoes on!"
"Leave me alone!" Her mother kicked her in the chest. Y/N held her breast tissue in searing pain and heaved over.
"Y/N! Are you okay!" Her brothers voice called from the door.
"Mom just kicked my right tit!"
"Yeah, she'll do that. Y/N, we have to go!"
Jake picked up Y/N around the middle and booked it for the side door. Once outside, he dropped his sister about to go back in.
The roof gave way.
The house collapsed.
"Fuck!" Jake backed away. The splinters flew.
Through their tears, they could smell a gas leak.
They backed away a few yards.
Then the house was gone.
"Jake!" Y/N just cried,
"Y/N!"
They both held each other for a long time.
"I can't believe mom just- and the house!"
"Fuck, Y/N we need to call the police or fire department or-"
"Do we have any other family?" Y/N asked Jake.
"After mom took up her new hobby if being an alcoholic, no."
"Jake, she just died!
"Y/N, she fucking deserved it!"
"Jake. You take that back right the fuck now."
"Look at what she did to us!"
"This wasn't her fault!"
"Of course the earthquake wasn't her fault. Us! Christ, Y/N! Are you blind."
"The only one who is blind here is you. She was sexually assaulted and driven to drinking."
"She didn't have to be."
"Are you serious right now!?"
"Don't you remember!? Don't you remember who HE was?!"
"It doesn't matter who he was!"
"We both told her how uncomfortable he made us."
"I remember. So, what?!"
"She didn't want us anymore, okay!?"
"You're lying! That never happened!"
"I heard her tell him."
"You're lying, Jake."
"Have I ever fucking lied to you?"
"No,"
"Did you like him before?"
"Not necessarily."
For nearly a minute, the siblings finally catch their breathes. They look at the demolished house. They look at the sky, all of the stars with a bit of an outline of the milky way.
Then they look at each other.
"Do you remember that one night," Jake started, "You cried to mom about how he made you feel. Like he had touched you in some way..."
"Yeah, but mom didn't really know." Y/N answered softly. She could already tell where this was going.
"Y/N, our mom is- was an enabler."
Y/N looked at the patches of grass. The dust that had covered a certain radius around the house.
"Can we talk about something else?"
"Sure,"
"Actually now would be a good time to call 911 or something. I think I left my phone inside."
"No worries," Jake pulled out his and his brows furrowed. "There's no bars."
"The earthquake must have done something."
"Hey, Y/N?" Jake asked,
"Yes?"
"What do you think of that star over there?"
"Which one?"
"That one. It's got a purple-pink hue to it.
"Oh, shit. It's kind of nice."
"Looks like some aliens are coming for you."
"Nah. They'd do the world a favor and take your sorry ass."
They laid down, watching it. Trying to keep the house and their late mother out of mind. Jake would take care of Y/N. Y/N would take care of Jake. They were all they needed for the past three years.
They fell asleep.
They woke up to a rather loud car horn blaring.
There was a white van stopped at the end of the driveway. It's LED lights blinding them.
"Who the fuck?" Jake muttered,
"Hello." A tall skinny man in a black suit got out of the car.
"We need to take you from this place to the place where it is safe."
"They talk kind of funny." Y/N commented,
"Hush," Jake said, "Maybe English isn't their first language. Maybe they are here to help us!" Jake quickly made his way over to them.
"You're here to help us!"
"Yes. Most definitely help. We help most definitely."
"Well alright, what do you think Y/N?"
"I don't know. I think we're good. We could still call relatives or..."
"They won't help us, Y/N."
"Yes, they won't help." The man said,
"I want to stay here." Y/N told Jake.
The man in the suit grabbed Jake's hand.
"We must leave her."
"Hold on a sec- I'm not going to ditch my sister." Jake yelled,
"Human is being difficult. Difficult human." The man's hand shook with electricity and Jake fell limp.
"Jake!" Y/N cried,
The van door shut and the rubber burned.
"Stop! No, please! Please come back!"
She could see the plate. It was a New York tag. Y/N held her chest.
"At least take me too! Don't leave me here alone!"
Y/N looked at her home. She wanted to go through the remains. Give her mom a burial.
"I don't have time. I'm sorry."
Y/N looked up at the sky.
"God! Now would be a great time to help!"
The purple star was gone.
They caused this. That man. That thing-
