Old Friend

I jumped from the fort and started running towards the scream. Why was she here? I knew she'd always been into adventure, but really? Here? Now? As I ran, more screams came from her.

"Kate, what are you doing?!" Darnellel called.

"Saving an old friend!" I called back.

Then I saw her. She was fighting wolves away from her with all she had. I jumped in front of her and used my powers to send the pack flying across the woods. I turned around to face her.

"Thanks," she whispered, looking terrified.

"Anabelle, what are you doing here?" I asked.

"I-- I was running," she looked down.

"From who? Don't tell me it was Ryder," I rolled my eyes.

She didn't say anything. Silence was my answer.

"Where is he?" I growled.

"Kate, don't," Anabelle pleaded.

"I'm tired of him doing this!" I yelled.

"What is going on here?" Darnellel finally caught up to me.

Anabelle looked up at him and back at me. "I thought you were dating Nathan."

"I am," I said. "Darnellel and I are just friends."

"Then why--?"

"Quit changing the subject," I said. "Where is Ryder?"

She looked down. "Looking for me."

I breathed. Anabelle didn't even know about me being a sorceress. I looked at Darnellel and he nodded. I whipped out my phone and texted him--just to clarify.

Don't tell her what's going on. Just get her to the fort until I figure something out.

I waited for him to recieve it. And when he did, he nodded and he guided her to the fort. I, on the other hand, stood there and waited for Ryder to make his appearence. I hate it when he gets drunk. He doesn't abuse anyone in any way, but when he's drunk, his temper goes through the roof and it scares Anabelle. But once he's sobered up, he's not that bad.

I heard rustling and panting coming from a few yards away. I met it and there the bastard stood, out of breath with a Miller Lite can in his hand.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Where's Anabelle?" he asked.

"Are you sober?" I asked.

"Where's Anabelle?" he repeated.

"Ryder, are you sober?" I took a step towards him.

"Kinda. I have a hangover," he said.

"It's not a hangover, unless you sleep it off. And you haven't slept. So, you're not sober, therefore, you won't find out where Anabelle is until you are," I said walking off.

"I'll find her," he growled.

"And then I'll have to use my magic on you," I laughed.

"What magic? You're nothing," he spat.

I stopped in my tracks. I chuckled and faced him. "Excuse me?"

"You're a human," he sneered.

"I am not. I have powers," I folded my arms.

"Like what? What are you?" he challenged.

"And I'd tell you... Why?" I laughed.

"Because then I'll know what I'm getting myself into. Anabelle's a witch, I'm a worlock.... You're human," he chuckled.

I sent a ball of magic straight to his face. "Can a human do that?"

"If I guess, will you tell me?" he asked.

"No," I said.

"Witch?" he asked.

"No."

"Werewolf?"

"No."

"Vampire?"

"No."

"Sor--"

"SHUT UP!!!" I yelled. I walked away and met Darnellel and Anabelle at the fort.

"Are you okay?" Darnellel asked.

"Peachy," I said.

That night, I made Anabelle take my blanket and pillow. I laid on the fort floor and had trouble sleeping. I decided to go outside to see what was going on. See if Ryder was close. I walked around and it was silent. The only sound was the crickets.

I could see with the help of the moon and stars. I hugged my cloak close to me, due to the cold air. What was Master planning? How were we supposed to be challenged if we had shelter and communication? There was a catch somewhere--Master was no fool. He had something planned. It was just gonna happen when everyone least expected it.

The wind began to pick up. Here was the challenge. Wind itself didn't do this. This was Master's doing. I remebered the spell he taught us on how to adapt to weather. I closed my eyes and whispered the spell.

"Not Mother Nature

But us

As we mature

And discuss

The world has balance

Make the heavy wind silence."

The wind settled and I continued to walk. I saw lights up ahead. Torches. I hid behind a tree to understand the concept of the chain of events.

"We have to find her," a man growled.

"What use of us will she hold?" another man asked.

"She is the boy's sister. If he realizes that we have her, he'll hand it over," the first man explained.

I was confused. Sorecerers and sorceresses never met their families until they became an Important. And by the time they were an Important, they left here to find their families. This made no sense. Sure, the parents knew who their children were, but siblings didn't. Right?

"Which partner is she with?" a girl asked.

"Um... Darnellel Nesson," the first man said.

Me? I have a brother?! How...? No. They must've misread something. I was so confused now. I quietly ran to my fort, got in, and locket it.

"Darnellel, Anabelle," I whispered.

They sat up and rubbed their eyes.

"People are on their way here. They're looking for me. You can't tell them who you really are," I looked at them.

They nodded and we waited for them to approach. It was within a few seconds there were knocks. I opened the door and a huge group of people were standing there. I smiled at them and acted like I didn't know what was going on.

"May I help you?" I asked politely.

"Are you Katlyn White?" the lead man asked.

"Why?" I asked.

"Are you?" he asked, a smile forming.

"No," I lied.

"Why am I having difficulty believing you?" he laughed.

I shrugged. "Do you have trust issues?"

He chuckled. "No. I have powers."

"Excuse me?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Get her!" he commanded his group.

I screamed, throwing balls of magic at them.

"Kate!" Anabelle yelled.

"Anabelle, go!" I commanded.

I saw her run away and saw Darnellel whispering a spell. As soon as his lips stopped moving, a barrier was put up, so Darnellel was stuck watching them take me. I kicked around and screamed for someone else to hear me and help me. None of my magic worked.

"I'm coming for you, Kate!" Darnellel yelled.

The last thing I remember before blacking out was a man saying, "Don't worry Kate. We'll only need you for a couple of days."

****

I woke up in a room and looked around. It was an average room. I hugged my cloak and felt my medallion. I opened it up and Darnellel answered straight away.

"Kate," he whispered.

"I don't know where I am," I whispered.

"It's okay. I'm coming for you. Is there a window?" he asked.

I looked around and found one. I nodded, and showed him. I opened the window so he could see my surroundings. I heard footsteps and I quickly closed my medallion and stuffed it in my shirt. The same man walked in and smiled.

"Trying to run away, are we?" he chuckled.

"Oh, no, I was just looking around," I said innocently.

"Come," he said.

"Where?" I questioned.

"Enough questions, Kate," he said.

I sighed and followed him. I wanted to go back to my challenge. I didn't want to be here. I didn't belong here. This was all just a game. I didn't have a brother. Wouldn't he be sorcerer, too? But Anabelle's sister was a werewolf...

"Sit here and we'll let you know when you can come out," he ordered.

I sat and waited. What was going on? I was hungry.

"Where is she?" a boy growled.

"She's here, don't worry. Just give us your abilities and we'll let her become an Important," the man said.

I heard the boy sigh. "I want to see my little sister."

"And you will. Just give me your powers," he said.

"I don't believe she's here," he said.

"Oh, Katlyn dear," the man called as if he liked me. "Your brother would like to meet you."

Was this really happening?
