Chapter 4
"Um, Dust? You have a letter! It's from Un-named himself!" The creaky old voice of Daisy said at the old donkey stepped through the stable doors. Daisy was an old female donkey recused from a stampede of stags in the Vast, a wide, grassy plain next to the Polar Birch Forest. But, the Vast is a lot different from the Wild, a flat part in the mountain range the horses were living in where mustangs and other wild horses lived. The Vast was much more peaceful.
It was three moon-cycles after Ginger and Raven's breaking. Last night was Gravel's breaking. If you don't remember, Gravel was a young gray-white male horse who was adopted by Chance, an elderly horse that lived down the road, because of his notorious cruel mother, Cobblestone. He was scarred for life by her beatings and abuse, but, he doesn't seem like it.
"Coming!" Dust woke up by the call and trotted over to Daisy. Daisy was holding a scarlet letter with a hoof-print on it, the sign of the Hierarchy.
"Dad?" Ginger called and walked over to Dust. She widened her eyes and began shaking her hooves, "You have a letter? Well, open it! Open it!" She used her hooves to punch her father in a sign of playfulness.
"Calm down, Ginger. Open it, hon," Marmalade raised her head from her pile of hay and walked over to Dust as well, "Thank you, Daisy."
"You're welcome, darling. And, Ginger! Oh, you have a letter, well, 'coupon' really..." Daisy said and turned to Ginger, putting a letter at her hooves.
Dust ripped open the letter he had and read aloud,
"Dear Dust,
You have worked hard for this role, and we are surprised we haven't invited for you to live in the Castle yet. So, I, Un-named, and Queen Cinnamon, have escorted you to live in the castle for the rest of your life. There is no turning down now. We are sorry you have to leave your family," It is for the best. You are now appointed Deputy Dust of the Hierarchy. Don't worry, your family can visit you.
Sincerely,
King Un-named and Queen Cinnamon."
Dust was taken aback. He turned to Marmalade, "I'm- I'm so sorry. The letter says you and our daughter can visit me if you want."
Marmalade stayed silent for a few minutes. Then, she whispered, "Yes, at least we can visit you." She snapped back into happiness and asked, "Now, let's open yours, right?"
Ginger took a moment to realize her mother was directing the question at her. She shook her head and said, "Yes, let us, I guess," She ripped open the much-less fancier letter and read aloud,
"Dear Ginger,
Heya! I would like to give you this 100% off coupon to my bakery! We have apples!
Love ya,
Oreo"
Ginger smiled sheepishly, "Wow! That's kind of her. Maybe we can go there tonight and celebrate my dad being in a high ranking in the army!"
Later that day, when the sun was setting, the gang went out with Gravel to Oreo's little shop.
"Hey, Gravel," Ginger looked at the foal, "Look over there." She pointed her hoof and directed it to a white female horse with a lavender scarf around her neck.
Gravel blinked, paused for a few moments, and shook his head, "No, no, no, no, no. If your gonna do what I THINK your gonna do, your wrong. I can't go over there to talk to her, I'm too shy! You know that."
Ginger snorted and punched Gravel in the shoulder, "Do it! Or else..." A playful smile smeared her face and she bucked, not to hard, Gravel to the white filly.
Gravel looked up and started stuttering, "I'm so sorry, m'lady! Really, I am-"
The white horse smiled and said softly, "Hello, my name is Alice. I'm the black-smiths daughter... And you are?"
Gravel was surprised by her willingness and got up from where he fell, "Hi, my name is Gravel." He stared in Alice's light green eyes for a while and realized, it was love at first sight.
Ginger looked back at Marmalade, Dust, and Daisy and said, "Boom. Ginger does it again."
Dust furrowed his brow and smiled, "Huh, maybe we should've named you "Matchmaker."
"Okay, you can stop now."
A dark-brown-and-white horse known as Oreo trotted over to the family and said in a country accent, "Is there anything I can do for you? And meet my new assistant! Well, not that new..."
A mule walked behind Oreo and whispered, "Hi."
"Holy Spera in heaven! Is that... My DAUGHTER?! Cookie?"
The mule looked up and widened her eyes and whispered, "M-mom? Uh, Daisy?"
Daisy embraced her daughter for a moment, and released in tears, "Before you ask, Mac is doing well."
Macintosh, Mac for short, was Daisy's mate. He was a hyper brown-russet horse who had an addiction to cocoa-seeds. They were a forbidden couple and when Daisy had Mac's daughter, Cookie, the Hierarchy cast her away in the lake the town of Fjell, the capital of the inhabitants of Confir. They do that if Spera, god of the Sun and Moon, disagrees with the foal's life by making it thunder and lightning. Turns out, Cookie survived.
"Good, heh," Cookie whispered. She turned back to Oreo and asked, "Should I get some cocoa-seeds for them? Blended or still?"
"Well, guys?" Oreo smiled a wide smile.
The other horses nodded. "We'll take blended," Ginger proclaimed.
"Well, go get them, Cookie."
Suddenly, an elderly horse busted though the door and shouted, "He's dead! My son is DEAD!"
