Chapter 5
"You know the chick is lying right?" Said Emma as I took her mugshot. Apparently, she broke into Dr. Hopper's office and stole the files for Henry. I think she's innocent, but the mayor thinks otherwise.
"Right please." I said. "Why would he lie?" Asked Graham. "The mayor put him up to this." She said. "She's got to have something on him. He's terrified of her just like everybody else in this town."
"To the left." I said. "Regina may be tough and intimidating, but I don't think she'd go as far as a frame job." Said Graham. I looked at him and quirked an eyebrow.
"How far would she go?" Asked Emma."What does she have her hands on?" "Well she's the mayor." I said. "She has her hands on everything." "Including the police force?" Said Emma.
Graham and I looked at each other. Then Henry came in with Mary Margaret. "Hey!" He said. "Henry! What are you doing here?" Asked Graham. "His mother told him what happened." Said Mary Margaret. "Of course she did." Said Emma, looking at us.
"Henry, I don't know what she said..." Henry cut Emma off. "Your a genius!" Said Henry. "What?" Said Emma. "I know what you were up to." Said Henry. "You were gathering intel. For Operation Cobra." "Sorry, I'm a bit lost." Said Graham. "I'll tell you later." I said.
"It's need to know sheriff." Said Henry. "And all you need to know is that Miss Blanchard is bailing her out." "You are? Why?" Asked Emma. "I uh, trust you." Said Mary Margaret in a flat tone. I smiled.
Silence. "Well, if you could uncuff me." Said Emma holding out her hands to Graham. "I have something I need to do." Graham unlocked her cuffs and all three left.
"Do you think Regina really framed her?" I asked. Graham looked at the ground. "You can have the rest of the day off if you'd like." He said. We both knew the answer, but didn't say it out loud. I grabbed my stuff and went out to my pickup.
As I drove, I happened to drive by the mayors house. And in the yard, I saw Emma with a chainsaw, cutting the limbs off Regina's apple tree. I smiled and kept driving.
I went to Granny's to get some lunch. Ruby brought me a burger with pickles and ketchup. "I haven't even ordered yet." I said. "We've been friends for years." Said Ruby. "I think I'd know your favorite lunch by now."
Ruby sat by me while I took a bite from my burger. "What happened last night?" She asked. "How did the date go?" I swallowed my food and avoided eye contact as I said "It went great."
"You left him didn't you." She said. I looked over to her. "How did you know that?" I asked. "He came in earlier and told me." She said. "But don't feel bad. Because I could hear him on the phone with his girlfriend. She was not happy."
I smirked. "Graham gave me the rest of the day off." I said. "Mind if I hang out here for a while? I can help clean the countertops." Ruby smiled. "I'm sure Granny would like the help."
I helped out for about a half hour before I saw Emma walk out to her car, which had a tire lock on it. I set the rag I was using down and walked outside.
She was about to walk off, when I called out to her. "Need a ride?" I asked. "Uh that would be great." Said Emma. We climbed into my pickup. "Where to?" I asked. "The mayor wants to see me." Said Emma. "Could you drop me off at her office?" "Sure." I said.
As we drove, I tried to start conversation. "I believe you, you know." I said. "About what?" Asked Emma. "About the mayor framing you." I said. "Well, thanks. Your the only one. Besides Henry and Mary Margaret." She said.
"Hey, are your parents okay with you driving strangers around?" Emma asked. "I don't have parents." I said. "Plus, I've met you before." "Yeah. Once because of a kid and once you took my mugshots." She said.
We got to the mayor's house. "Good luck." I said. "Uh, thanks." Said Emma and climbed out. "Are you gonna need a ride back?" I asked. "I can walk." She said. I shrugged and drove back to my apartment.
I sat on my bed reading one of my favorite books, Peter Pan, until I got a phone call. "Hello?" I said into the phone. "Natalia, Operation Cobra is off." It was Henry. "What, why?" I asked.
"Emma, she said I'm crazy." He said. I could tell he was on the verge of tears. "Henry, your not crazy." I said. He didn't answer. "Remember when Jared went missing, and I said that night I heard a flute playing, but nobody believed me? And they called me crazy?"
"Yeah." Said Henry. "You were the only one that believed me. Even though you were little, you still had hope we would find him. Don't let that get to you. Okay?"
"I have to go to my therapy session." Said Henry and hung up. But I could tell he wasn't crying anymore. I don't know if Emma really meant it, or Regina set her up again. But I'm glad Henry feels a bit better.
