Ryan seems to come from a very caring and normal family but he doesn't really talk about it too much for no particular reason. He loves to write, specifically poetry, which was how he met Hannah. They were friends and he published a poem that she wrote, without her consent, which in return, completely humiliated her and made her feel worse about other things that had happened previously.

During everything going on after her death, with the tapes, Ryan was very aware of what he did, much like Alex was. He didn't claim she was a liar like others and owned up to what he did and the role he played. He shares a personal disinterest in Courtney because of how she claimed that Hannah lied about the situation with Bryce and how everything was her fault and she was lying about everything.

Ryan is shown to be a highly intelligent but also arrogant and selfish person. He seems to not care much about other's feelings and he is a pretty impulsive person to say the least. Despite all that he is still not a heartless person, even though he can come off that way at times. He's got a soft side to him, you just have to stick around long enough to find it.
