Chapter 7

~~

Sam looked up when he heard someone walk in. He smiled brightly and tried to sit up. It was a bit painful but he managed.

"Hey Jess!" He said excitedly. Jessica smiled slightly and played with her hands. She walked over and stood beside Sam. "Hey Sam.." She said quietly.

Dean looked between the two and took a deep breath. "I'll leave you guys alone." He said and walked out. He hated whenever he had to leave his brother's side, even if it was only for a few seconds. Going to work was hard for him.

"So Jess.." Sam said awkwardly. He didn't know what to do. He had never done something like this before. He'd dated but never told someone he'd loved them.

"Sam..you look horrible." She said and her eyes widened. "Oh my god I'm sorry! I didn't mean to say that!"

Sam chuckled slightly and looked down. He shrugged. "No it's okay. I know I do." He sighed. Jess placed her hand gently over Sam's and sighed sadly.

"Your brother said you wanted to tell me something."

Sam nodded slowly an took a deep breath. "I know I'm going to die.. I don't know when but I know it's going to be sooner rather than later. Since you know I have inoperable cancer."

Jess tensed beside him and he looked up. "So I wanted to tell you that I love you before I go. Because I do."

Sam waited and waited..and waited. For Jess to say something but she didn't. She leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to Sam's lips before standing back up. Sam didn't move he just watched her.

"I'm sorry Sam. You're my best friend." She said softly and Sam nodded. He had expected as much. Except for the kiss. He hadn't expected that.

"Then why..did you kiss me?" He asked quietly.

"To say goodbye." Jess said softly. "I'm moving." She said and Sam nodded sadly. "Oh.." Jess gave Sam a hug. Barely there since she didn't want to hurt him.

Then she walked out. Dean had kept his promise.. Sam supposed that's all that mattered. He wanted the best for Jess anyways not for her to be stuck with him.

~~

Dean pushed some hair out of Sam's face and sighed quietly. His little brother had been sleeping a lot lately and he was so weak. So weak.

Dean hated to leave him now but he had already talked to Sammy and he had given him a small smile and told Dean to go for it. Go find love whether it was with this guy Castiel or someone else.

Dean had given a sad smile. Why was his brother so awesome and yet he had to die?! Dean didn't think it was fair.

But he had pushed Sam out of his mind for tonight. He felt a bit guilty about it but he wouldn't be able to actually decide anything about Castiel if he was hung up on worrying about his brother. And that wasn't fair to Cas.

--

Castiel sat on the bench of the bus stop. He was waiting for Dean. It was the only place he could think of to meet the guy. Plus they needed to take the bus anyways since none of them had a car or anything.

They had agreed to meet at six and Cas had gotten at the bus stop at exactly 5:50. He wanted to be early so he could get his thoughts together.

Except now.. Now it was an hour later. 6:50 pm. Cas had waited an hour and Dean never showed up. Cas felt like crying. He was an idiot. How could he not see this coming? Of course a guy like Dean would stand Castiel up. Cas wanted to go home. Only ten minutes until the next bus. 7:00 pm and he could get on that bus and go home and cry himself to sleep. In a manly way of course..

~~

Castiel stood at the pier. The last date he had "went" on. The one that hadn't gone very well. It had been almost two months ago before Dean had asked him out.

Cas looked around, his hands in the pockets of his trench coat. It had been a half hour later than the guy he was meeting said they'd meet. But Castiel was merciful. Hey people could be late. It happened all the time.

So Castiel waited. And waited. And waited.

An hour passed.

Then two.

Then three.

Castiel waited all night. Of course after about an hour and a half he knew the guy had stood him up. He was just so sad that he didn't feel like moving.

Finally around one am he walked home. It took him about an hour to get there but the buses stopped running at midnight so he had no other choice.

He got home, stripped down, took a bin of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and turned on his favorite show. Sitting up all night and watching tv. He finished the ice cream and skipped work the next day.

There was a lot of background between him and that other guy. So it made him so very sad that he had stood him up.

~~

Cas sighed and checked his watch. Exactly a minute before the bus came. Knowing his luck with dates the bus would probably stand him up as well.

Then he could see the bus pull up and it made a loud creaking noise and a huff from the exhaust pipe as it stopped in front of him. Cas stood up and wrapped his trench coat around himself. It was freezing out. He only had his white button up black slacks and blue tie underneath the bulky coat.

He had wanted to dress nice for the date with Dean and this was his version. Well it was definitely nicer than the hospital scrubs Dean always saw him in.

He sighed as the door opened and his eyes widened. No way. No fricken way. There standing on the steps of the bus was Dean. He looked incredible. He had a black suit on and a deep scarlet bow tie around his neck tied under the collar of his white shirt.

He smiled sheepishly and held out a bouquet of red roses. Cas looked up into Dean's eyes.

The bus driver sighed. "Come on I don't have all night." Dean walked up the stairs of the bus and Castiel followed suit. He didn't know if he wanted to forgive Dean for making him wait an hour with no explanation.

--

Dean smiled up at Cas sheepishly from where he was sitting and Cas sat beside him. He held out the flowers and Castiel looked down at them before taking them uncertainly. Dammit! Dean had really screwed up this time.

"Look Cas I have a very good explanation for this. I am so so so so sorry."

Castiel looked up at Dean with a sad expression. "Go ahead then."

"Well I was at the hospital with Sam and I was about to leave to come meet you. I was already dressed and everything." He looked down at his suit and up at Cas with a shy smile.

"But then I got a call from my boss and the guy that I had been trying to arrest for ages had been found and I had to go and arrest him because they had him surrounded and no one else was going to do it. So I went and there was this big hassle of him shooting at me. I finally got him in cuffs though and I looked at the time and realized I was late. God I felt so bad. So I ran as fast as I could to the bus stop. I picked those up on the way.."

Dean pointed to the flowers in Cas' hands.

"And I hopped on this bus to come meet you. I would've called or texted but I was busy catching that stupid son of a bitch and it's really hard to use your phone while you're running the whole way to the bus stop."

By the time Dean was done talking he was panting for breath from talking so fast and he was playing with his hands nervously.

Cas stared at Dean skeptically for a long time. Great he probably didn't believe Dean. But it was the truth.

Castiel's eyes wandered down to Dean's hands and he lifted his left one. He pulled the sleeve up slightly where Dean's wrist was bleeding. Damn he hadn't even noticed that. There was a torn hole in his suit jacket's sleeve and Cas frowned looking up into Dean's eyes again.

"What happened?"

"The guy must of just grazed my wrist with a bullet." Dean chuckled slightly. "Guess I'll need a new suit jacket huh?" He smiled lopsidedly and Cas smiled slightly. He dropped Dean's wrist and untied his blue tie. He wrapped it around Dean's wrist and tied it tightly.

"There you go."

Dean looked down at his ghetto looking wrist but it was a sweet gesture. He smiled up at Cas.

"So you believe me? Because it's the god honest truth."

Castiel smiled warmly which made Dean's stomach fill with butterflies and the other man nodded. "Yes. I believe you. But you better be taking me somewhere awesome."

Dean laughed and nodded. "Don't worry I am. Trust me." He smiled and Cas nodded smiling.

"I'm sorry I made you wait Cas."

Cas shook his head. "It's okay. It wasn't really your fault."

Dean smiled and stepped off of the bus as it came to a halt and held out his good hand to help Cas. Castiel chuckled and took Dean's hand as he stepped off the bus.

"Thank you."

He said as they walked but he kept his fingers intertwined with Dean's which made Dean smile softly. "Wait till you see this place you'll like it a lot."
