Chapter 14
A flash of orange, the cold hard ground, the sound of the ball bouncing away...
Yelling, gasps... Blood.
"Chanyeol!"
~
"Alright guys, let's do well this game. I don't have any more words to say because as you know, I've probably spent up most of our basketball time with inspirational words..." Chanyeol trailed off and Baekhyun didn't even bother listening.
He was way too angry at Chanyeol to even take one of his words to heart.
"We're playing against BTS this time and as you know, the farther you get into the tournament, the better the opponents get. I have to admit that they're going to be tough to beat, but if we all work together, I'm sure we can pull through."
It was finally Thursday, and school had already ended. The basketball game would start in around fifteen minutes and Baekhyun wasn't even bothered.
He really felt like taking his anger out on something, so he'd just take it out on basketball and beat BTS.
Once the members stood up to go to the gym, Sehun appeared by Baekhyun's side as usual. "You should come with me to grab my math textbook. I forgot it at my locker..." Baekhyun nodded and they made their way down the hallway, getting to Sehun's locker and stopping. "Hey... Are you sure you're going to be alright for this game?" He asked while wrestling with his lock.
Baekhyun shrugged nonchalantly. "It's not like I have to pass it to Chanyeol, and he doesn't have to pass it to me. That way we'll stay out of each other's paths."
"Yesterday, I tried calling Chanyeol but he didn't even reply. He wasn't calling anyone either, he just ignored it. He's being so mean to me lately," Sehun pouted and Baekhyun laughed. Sehun finally pulled open his locker and took his textbook, closing it and locking it up again.
The two walked back to get to the gym. "Do you think he hates me or something?" Sehun questioned.
"You're such a kid, he was probably just busy—"
Wait, why am I defending him?
Baekhyun shook his head and suddenly Sehun grabbed Baekhyun's arm and pulled him away.
"Seh—"
"Shhh," he cut Baekhyun off rudely with a hand on Baekhyun's mouth. Baekhyun peered up at him with curious eyes as Sehun just looked somewhere else.
Sehun was looking around the corner and with the new silence, Baekhyun could hear talking.
"Come on," the younger whispered and grabbed Baekhyun's arm, sneaking around the corner before crouching behind one of the trash can and recycling bins.
Baekhyun thought this was a stupid idea, but he couldn't argue when he's already done this twice since Dara's arrived. The two peeked out from behind the objects and Baekhyun saw Chanyeol's back.
"I can't take this anymore, Chanyeol. I can't be your girlfriend anymore." It was a voice he's heard too much for his likings.
"Please, Dara..."
Of course, it has to be Chanyeol and Dara. Again.
"How am I supposed to keep doing this when you're such an asshole?" She questioned astoundedly.
"Dara... Just think about this like you're doing it for the money," Chanyeol spoke as he ran a hand through his hair frustratingly.
She sighed. "I know. I know, but is two hundred really worth it?"
"I'm not that much of a jerk."
"Whatever you believe, almighty Park Chanyeol..."
"We both need this so, please... Just reconsider," he begged and Baekhyun was left dumbfounded.
He couldn't believe this.
Chanyeol was paying Dara to be his girlfriend.
Why? That seemed to be the only question in Baekhyun's head at the moment.
He couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that Chanyeol would even go to these lengths, just to lie in his friend's faces.
How could he?
If Baekhyun had known Chanyeol was like this, he would have never approached him on that day. He would have never joined the basketball team at all.
"Fine," she let out another sigh. "But it's only for the money alright?"
Baekhyun wanted to stand up from his hiding spot and slap some sense into that girl.
He also wanted to choke Chanyeol to the point of death before burying him. Most preferably in the pits of hell.
Baekhyun was one second away from doing it before Sehun grabbed his arm and shook his head.
The smaller didn't know if he should be grateful that Sehun stopped him, or if he should be mad that Sehun was going to stop him for doing something that would probably help everyone.
Chanyeol and Dara went away and Baekhyun stood up, almost screaming.
"Did you hear that, Sehun?!"
"Yes, I was right there—"
"He's paying her!" Baekhyun exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air. "He's paying her to be his girlfriend! What's his problem?! I didn't actually think that he lied all the time but what the fuck?"
"Maybe this is some kind of—"
"No. Chanyeol's done enough shit for me to know that this is just another one of those. I wish I could just... Ugh, I just want to punch him in the face," Baekhyun groaned.
"I know you don't actually want to, Baekhyun."
"But I do! I want to so much!"
"Baekhyun, just calm down... We have a basketball game really soon. Don't let this anger ruin it."
Baekhyun grits his teeth and shut his eyes, exhaling. "You're right... I'll just get him later."
"That's not what I meant—"
"Okay... You're right also. I'll just wait for the time Karma bites him like a bitch."
"Sure, I'll accept that." Sehun shrugged and the two made it back to the gym in silence, trying to forget the things they just overheard.
"I hate him so much..." Baekhyun mumbled while the two were changing in the empty change room.
"You don't actually. I know you Baekhyun, and I know Chanyeol's a good friend to you."
Good friend? Hah, I loved him at some point.
"Sehun. I hate him, alright? I wish he would just disappear from my sight and never come back. Hell, I wish I never even met him. What was wrong with me? Why did I try so hard to get on the basketball team when all I was doing was sending myself to the devil?" Baekhyun shook his head. "I was so stupid—I am so stupid. He's such a lying, cheating bastard and yet I still can't do anything."
"You say this now, but do you think you can say it when he can actually hear you?"
"Yes," Baekhyun replied almost immediately, but what he didn't know was that he already did.
Chanyeol didn't really know what to feel when he accidentally overheard Sehun and Baekhyun, but he knew that these feelings were far from happiness or delight.
Chanyeol sighed and left before he invaded anymore, not wanting to hear Baekhyun bash him behind his back.
"Something wrong?" Junmyeon asked and Chanyeol shook his head, unconsciously letting out a sigh. "Right..."
"Okay, maybe there is. But we have a game in five so I don't want to talk about my problems."
Junmyeon shook his head scoldingly. "Oh Chanyeol, always solving things with basketball."
Chanyeol grinned at Junmyeon. "What did you expect? I love basketball."
"I don't think you'll ever stop either."
"Me neither."
Junmyeon and Chanyeol began stretching, talking casually about classes and what they've been doing on the weekends.
When Baekhyun and Sehun walked out of the change rooms, Chanyeol's face visibly fell and Junmyeon sighed. "Are you sure you don't want to talk?"
"We have very little time. Yes, I'm sure that I don't want to talk right now," Chanyeol reassured and Junmyeon just looked at his friend worriedly.
Although Chanyeol knew Sehun for a longer time, he told Junmyeon most of his secrets, because Junmyeon always knew exactly what to say and how to solve it.
He loved Junmyeon in a way that never passed best friends, and he was glad that he became friends with Junmyeon.
BTS left the change rooms and after they stretched a bit, the game was finally ready to start.
The referee, Junmyeon's dad, called the two teams to get ready.
When Chanyeol said he'd play first, he noticed Baekhyun sitting on the bench without hesitation. Of course Baekhyun would do that because after the words Chanyeol had heard, he can't deny that Baekhyun really did hate him.
Even though it stung Chanyeol's heart and made his breathing ragged, he kept it together to win this game.
Because Chanyeol was still the captain and he still had to bring his team to the finals, even if feelings had to be last...
Tip off, Chanyeol gets the ball.
First point scored by BTS, 2-0 and disappointed members on the benches.
Seven minutes pass without another point, and subs are called.
Chanyeol sits on the bench and Baekhyun goes on.
2-2, cheering and encouraging words come from the short brunette.
2-4 in the Raven's favour.
Subs were called again and Chanyeol stood up, going onto the court once more. This time, Baekhyun stayed on, except there's a look in the smaller's eyes that Chanyeol became skeptical of.
Chanyeol stood just behind half line, arms out and defending Namjoon. The guy in front of him smirks at him but Chanyeol doesn't let his guard down... Because when can he ever?
Namjoon bounced the ball in a steady pace, and if not for the cheers of his team members, the taller felt like he could've been hypnotized by the noise.
Another two seconds passed before Namjoon does something Chanyeol didn't expect him to.
He passed it to someone behind Chanyeol and took off. Chanyeol followed him of course, not letting him off the hook just because he didn't have the ball.
Chanyeol didn't know how it happened but Namjoon suddenly had the ball in his hands again and was running quickly away from Chanyeol.
He got up close to the net but Chanyeol stopped him, jumping in front of him before he could shoot.
Chanyeol smacked the ball out of Namjoon's hands and grabbed it, dribbling to the opposite side.
He still couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Either way, Chanyeol scored the point with Namjoon mere milliseconds away from stopping him. Everyone cheered and Chanyeol smiled to himself.
He turned and met eyes with Baekhyun. Again, there's the expression in Baekhyun's eyes that he couldn't pinpoint. However, it sent warnings in Chanyeol's head.
Chanyeol peeled his gaze away and went back to their side, getting ready to stop Namjoon again and if he was lucky, get another point. Except this time someone else started with the ball, and so Chanyeol was just defending and blocking his check. Chanyeol watched Baekhyun try to swipe the ball from his check, his small arms darting in every direction.
Baekhyun finally manages to steal the ball from Jin and goes down the court with those elegant moves of his, reminding Chanyeol of a spring bird fluttering in the wind.
He got stopped by Jin and Chanyeol quickly runs in, trying to somehow at least help.
Baekhyun's not bouncing the ball anymore and as he holds it in his hands, he looks around for someone to pass it to.
No one is free except for Chanyeol with the help of Sehun, and he's calling Baekhyun to pass it. Everyone is.
"Baekhyun! Pass the ball!" Everyone on the bench called.
The rule in basketball was that you only had five seconds to pass the ball, and Baekhyun was taking an awful amount of seconds.
"Pass it, Baekhyun!" Sehun called.
Yet again, Baekhyun does nothing.
"Baekhyun!" Chanyeol called himself and Baekhyun finally looked at him.
"You want me to pass it? Fine!"
Chanyeol backed away slightly when he finally found out what those emotions in Baekhyun's eyes were.
Animosity, fury, hatred.
It was all Chanyeol could comprehend before he saw a flash of orange and all he could feel was pain.
The impact caused him to fall on the ground with a thud, and everything in the gym stopped.
The only thing Chanyeol could hear was the bouncing of the ball, slowly getting quieter and quieter.
People began yelling, while others were gasping in shock.
Chanyeol cradled his face in his hands, his fingers getting sticky from all the blood.
"Chanyeol!"
