Chapter 8
*Frisk POV*
Just as I thought I had broken the ice between us, things got quiet again. I sigh to myself, shoot. Honestly, this guy is a mystery in itself. Since we met he's been a wave of different emotions and a hurricane of attitude. Sometimes I wonder why he's so cruel to me at times... I really have no idea. Then he's a teasing jerk from time to time too, again, don't know what I did to deserve that either. One minute he wishes I hadn't fallen, the next he's defending me, only to yell at me some more. Nothing about him has made sense so far. Nothing. He's just...Strange. Unknown. I don't find myself very fond of it.
Though there isn't much light in these caverns, the small rays that do shine through from the surface brighten the entire forest miraculously, bathing G and I in it's glorious, sun setting hues. Dim yellow light submerges through the green leaves from hovering branches as we pass, both of us traveling at a different pace than the other. While G was trailing behind I advanced forward, still admiring the magnificent world around me. Thank God I hadn't died on my way down the mountain, I might have never seen any of this.
I walked alongside a flowing river, it sparkled in the afternoon light, effortlessly gliding over pitch black river stones, smooth and shiny in the bottom of the shallow waters. I listen as birds chirp, filling the air with songs and calls to their lovers, assisting the environment to sweep over me, sharpening my senses so I now feel at one with the forest. I began to wonder what Snowdin looked like. It's a town... Right? So will it look like this? Or will it be any old modern town like the ones we have on the surface? Where is Snowdin? Then a thought hits me;
I have no idea where I'm going. This bring in another question
"G, shouldn't you be in front?"
Stopping in my tracks, I turn to face him. I must've snapped him out of a daze of sorts, because I had to call out to him again since he was still walking, hood over his face and staring at the ground.
"G!"
His head shot up and his sockets were wide for a second. He eases and puffs on a cigarette, pulling it out and blowing smoke into the open air. There goes the outdoor freshness.
"What was that, Doll?"
I groan at the nickname, rolling my eyes before answering. "Shouldn't you be in front? I mean, you're the one who knows the way after all, right?"
He half nods, hood still over his head, it's gold rim glistening. "Yeah."
"Well then lead the way, you Bonehead! I don't feel like getting lost for hours!" I step to the side and bow slightly, ushering him forward in a sweeping motion with my arms with enthusiasm.
He half laughs at this, thumping/flicking my forehead as he goes. Ow. I rub my head and follow shortly after. But he's a faster walker than I was, so I had to take longer steps. That's when I noticed him limp, causing him to slow a bit. It wasn't very noticeable, but still there. I felt horrible, knowing that was why he was so far behind me. Sure, G was a jerk and all but he was still hurt, and I practically told him to rush himself even if so. An ache tore way at my heart, filling me with guilt. I speed up more now, walking alongside G. When he sees me he slows more so I can keep up, what a relief.
The sun above ground has set itself further, longer shadows stretching around G and I. Boredom being overwhelming, I allow my curiosity to get the better of me.
"How come you limp, G?"
He looks taken aback by this...Yet he pretends he didn't hear me. "Eh...?"
"I've noticed that..You tend to limp...E But I've only seen it today...What happened?" I paused a lot while asking that for some reason, might be because I felt I was overstepping my boundaries.
G looked down at me, removing his hood from his skull and smirking. A bad feeling overwhelmed me as a spark had forged inside him. I swallow my pride as he leans over, only inches from our noses touching. My face burns up and I back away. This earns a chuckle from the cocky skeleton as he stands straight again, hand on his hip. "Ya' really wanna know?"
I nod. G smirks again and pulls me towards him, he stoops down to my level and our shoulders touch, squishing my cheek against his as he waves his hand before us as if he were slowly wiping a window. My face burns. Too. Close. For comfort.
"Picture this, Sweetcheeks!" he starts.
Here we go. I roll my eyes. G continues, freeing me from his tight grasp and placing both hands on my shoulders now, turning me to face him at eye level.
"I'm in a bar, right? Ya' know, making my rounds n' stuff. Well, imagine a drunk man tryin' to grind against a pillar-"
I cut in, holding back a chuckle and shoving G away from me before my heart beats any faster. "What the heck, G?! I don't want to hear that!"
"No seriously Doll, I'm not joking, just shut up and listen." I begin walking off again and he follows, continuing on with his story. "So imagine a drunk guy tryin' to grind against a pillar in the middle of the bar, kay?"
"Uh.. sure."
"Alright, so when he starts that bullshit.." he starts to talk with his hands moving about in the air, motioning the actions. "I get up and tell him to go jerk off with his wife or somthin' instead of a thing a wood." I snicker, covering my mouth. "Then he said ' I don't got no wife', and kept goin' at it. Then I told em to go jerk off with a melon."
My eyes widen for a second, processing it. I can't help but laugh now, punching G in the ribs as hard as possible. "My god G!!! Why the hell would you tell him that?! You jerk!" Laughs continue to escape from my throat as he goes on, holding his ribs.
" Apparently he didn't like me sayin' that, so he started beaten up on me. I had no choice but to fight back, really. Bein' the fair guy that I am, I decided I'd go easy on em' since he had more to drink than I had. So, I fought with just my fists, seeing no need to use magic or weapons. Well, that jackass didn't get with the picture, so he started tryn' to stab at me with a knife he'd had in his pocket er somethin'." He swings a spetend knife around as if he's dueling with someone. "When I finally got him weakened he managed to throw that damned knife into my knee."
I cringe. Jeez, in the knee? That must've sucked.
"Thing is, the knife was one of those upgraded attack items, you can only find em in the deepest cave of the Underground, and they're a bitch to find. Anyway, the knife was pretty much; in simple terms; badass."
I roll my eyes to his description. Eye Roll count; 3.
"So when he threw it, it lodged deep into my bone and nearly chopped it off. Even after I'd had it healed up by Toriel, I haven't been able to move it the same way again. Or at least, not after using magic. I wear a brace to keep it from being sore every now and then. But I keep it under my pants so monster pay no attention to it." He motions down to his knee, pulling his pant leg back slightly and revealing part of it underneath. I could see the shape of it and felt bad for some reason... I immediately shake off the guilt, internally yelling at myself for pitying him.
G finishes, using jazz hands "The end."
I clap slowly with sarcasm. "That was amusing, G. Now the real question is who won? You or the horny drunk man?"
G snickers "Me of course! I beat the shit outta' him!"
I place my hands on my hips, balancing my weight on one foot. He gives me a strange look, one I wasn't familiar with. Whatever.
"Are ya' sure? I mean, he got away with nearly chopping one of your legs off. So... technically you were left crippled while that other guy walked out with a few missing teeth and a couple of scattered bruises..."
I purposefully give a wild smirk, he jolts slightly at my sudden expression.
"So who really won here...G?"
He stared me down, sockets widened and pupils darting up and down my body, did I shock him so badly that he doesn't have a comment? No come back, no pet names, nothing? Would he do anything at all?
We stand there for a few minutes more in eerie stillness. He finally just lets out a low, almost seductive chuckle and pats my head before walking off.
"Well damn, Dolly. Not as stupid as I thought. Think I even saw some gears turning up there too."
I growl... Taking a step forward I call from behind him.
"Wait a second, where are you going now?"
"Just getting some wood. We'll be campin' out here tonight. Just be sure to stay over there with your hood up. Can't risk losing ya' out here."
G's figures wanders off into the woodland, I still see his limp from where I stand... Either he got in a lot of meaningless bar fights, or he's a flat ass liar.
~~~~~~~~~~
It's not long before G comes back with a bundle of thick sticks and branches in his hands. He arranges them all in a stack and surrounds the bunch with large rocks, no allowing me to help. I hate it, to say the least. I'm not some child in need of catering. I can work too. "How did you manage to find all that?"
He groans in response. "You ask a hella lot of questions."
With that he starts the fire using two rocks he'd found, sparking them together.
It's dark out now, and the air is crisp. G throws his cloak at me. "Get some shut eye, got a long day tomorrow."
"Would you stop giving me your cloak? Seriously G... Stop trying to be gallant. I have my own to wrap up in.." I toss it back to him. "Thanks, but I'm good..." I grumble with a huff, taking a seat by the flames and lying down. I was grateful, but in all honesty it was too weird for this jackass to be lending me his clothes. Especially when they reek of those cancer sticks.
"Suit yourself, Dollface."
G lies down on the opposite end of the fire, hands behind his head and gazing up through the tree branches above us. He really is an odd one, I'll give him that much. That could be why I haven't tried running off a second time, I've been interested to see what he'd do in certain situations if I had stuck around. Wondering why he cared if I were taken or lost out here anyways. More importantly, why didn't he just leave me in the Ruins? If G hates me so much, he obviously does, the why would he bother to take me to Toriel? Maybe he has a heart of sympathy after all? I don't know... I've been so confused..So dazed since this all started.. I can't even remember what I ate this morning. I hardly remember what happened two hours ago.
In the midst of all my other thoughts running off without me, one stands out from them all and decides to print into my train of thought freight cart....
Why did G save me...? If he wants me gone.. Shouldn't he have just let that dog monster have me? And what about Flowey? He saved me then too. Come to think of it I only ever thanked him that once when we'd first met. Even that wasn't a genuine one though... Will he even want my thanks? Would he even care or would he just call me a big baby?
"Hey...G?"
I listen to him fake snore. Scraping up all the courage I had, I inhale deeply and breath out calmly and genuinely.
"Thank you G. For... Helping me out earlier today.. I'm sorry I ran off and... Just... thanks."
I watch as a smirk plasters to his lips and huff. "But I don't want you doing anything like that again. Ever."
With that I roll over and shut my eyes tightly, hoping that I'd vanish from existence.
