Chapter 15
Here it is, chapter 15! Hope you enjoy it!
Present
At this point, a police officer had come into the room with a tray, and began giving out cups of coffee to the people at the table. Sara wasn't in the mood for a drink, so she shook her head. Flasheart didn't want one, in case it would distract him, plus he was a bit hesitant about that sort of drink, as he hadn't really drank it before, saying he had stuck to water during his time on Earth. Paul took a cup, grasped it with his right hand, but it shock as he held it up to his head, spilling some coffee on the table, but nobody really minded. Jai didn't want a cup, especially due to his condition, but also he was paying attention to the story, as was Freddy. "So, you chose to go back, didn't you?" Sara asked Flasheart. "Yes. A few weeks of rest later, I went back on my fully repaired ship, went back the same way under the guise of another test mission. Turns out I'd been gone three months on Earth, to find that a new millennium had started." Flasheart added with a smile. "Or in other words, the year 2000." Paul added further.
Flashback
Flasheart landed the ship by the farmhouse, a spring sun up in the sky. He walked up to the farmhouse, smelling something and hearing voices. He walked up to the front door, opened it and, following his nose and ears, went into the kitchen, to see Steven and Jessica in their dressing downs, getting a drink, Jessica turning around rightwards to face Flasheart, her eyes widening in surprise. Steven saw the surprised look on her face so he turned leftwards, causing him to gasp in surprise upon the sight of the alien they were starting to think they wouldn't see again, some of Steven's drink spilling onto his clothes and dressing gown. Flasheart smiled in response.
Flasheart sat on the sofa, Jessica sitting across from him, holding up a newspaper about the new millennium, explaining to to him. "This time I decided to stay a little longer." Flasheart began helping out on the farm, learning about the animals, scanning them, quickly getting the hang of milking cows and collecting eggs from hens. He also helped Steven cultivate the fields, planting crops.
Present
"Wait a minute, don't you have farming on your home planet?" Paul asked, curiously. "Oh, well, we used to long ago, but not any more. We grow our food in buildings, where it is grown in minutes in a vat of chemicals, lifted out, recreating its genetics from the assigned product or something that that. I never paid attention to that sort of thing." Freddy answered on behalf of his father, who looked at him with a nod in response before he continued.
Flashback
Flasheart stood outside as he watched Jessica walk up to her car to go back to the city to work. She stopped by the door and turned around leftwards to face him, wearing comfy clothes. "Are you sure you don't want to come with me?" Jessica asked him, repeating an offer she'd made earlier. Flasheart shook his head. "No. I feel that the 'city folks' as your father calls them, would freak out if they saw an 'alien' wandering around their city." Flasheart also repeated his answer, using air quotes. "You know I still can't believe that nobody has come to ask us about your ship landing here." Steven spoke, causing them Flasheart to look over his right shoulder, Jessica look past Flasheart to see Steven coming up to them, wearing his coat and farm boots. "I'm surprised the government hasn't sent someone here to investigate. I'm starting to think nobody but us knows you even entered our atmosphere." Steven continued. "Yeah. I've been thinking the same thing." Jessica added. "Maybe your ship cannot be detected on radar, and since we're out in the countryside, there's not many people to witness such a thing as this." Steven suggested to which Flasheart shrugged.
"Who know? But, maybe it's for the best." Flasheart spoke, to which Jessica raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?" Jessica asked, raising an eyebrow. "Well, from what I've learned about your species, I don't think they'd all welcome me to your planet with open arms. Some might even fear you. There'd be panic. Primitive minded beings have been known to interpret things differently, recklessly and sometimes even badly." Flasheart answered, to which Jessica's face grew a bit like she'd been offended. "What's that you said?" She said back, definitely offended. "Hey, no offence, Jessica. I'm just making a point." Flasheart replied with his hands held out. "I agree. I believe mankind is not ready to be learning of life from other worlds." Steven said. "Anyway...goodbye, Flasheart. Bye, dad." Jessica said as she opened the door and got into the car. "Yeah... see you. Bye." Flasheart said, using his best knowledge so far of human greetings, as he watched her shut the door, started the engine and began to drove away. Flasheart watched the car drive away in silence, continuing to stand still. The silence continued for a few seconds, the sound of the wind blowing in his ears was the only thing heard as he also heard Steven's footsteps coming up to him. He then felt the fabric of a glove touch his right shoulder, so she looked rightwards to see Steven with a serious look on his face, gesturing to him to follow him. Steven then turned leftwards and walked at a brisk pace, Flasheart keeping at steady pace behind him, back towards the farmhouse.
Steven and Flasheart entered the farmhouse and Steven then turned around leftwards and faced Flasheart, his expression stern. "You and I are both right, you know that?" He asked him immediately. "About what? What we just talked about outside?" Flasheart asked, unsure how to respond. "Yes!" Steven exclaimed back tensely, but then looked downwards with a sign, letting it out of his system before looking back up at him. "If it was revealed that you are an alien, coming to visit Earth, there'd be anarchy. Panic in the streets. The powers that be would be terrified, unsure what to do. The politicians will no doubt put on a brave face on the outside, but on the inside, will panic, go the easy way. You that when they created the atomic bomb, which I'm sure you've read about by now, some of the scientists feared the consequences of power they had unleashed." Steven advised. "Yes, I read something about that. One of them said, 'Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds'." Flasheart quoted. "You've done your research. But also,... we Humans have a saying about 'opening Pandora's box'. Where a small event happens, resulting an a chain of unforeseen events, mostly bad. Well, I fear this may be one of those moments. It would change the world." Steven added. "Looking back on it, I now think he was right about that."
A few days later, Flasheart left Earth for home. Hotspur was again curious, as were his superiors, who'd noted from the ships data that he'd gone the same way as he did before, so Flasheart said in his report that the planet he went to the first time aroused his interests so much that it was worth going back to do more research. He realised that he couldn't just keeping going back, so he asked for permission to go back soon to conduct more research. They were hesitant, but his evidence was convincing, so they relented, though Hotspur, feeling his brother wasn't telling him something, got a seed of suspicion.
And that's chapter 15 done! Hope you enjoyed it! Please leave a vote!
Sorry if it's short, but I just couldn't really think much for this chapter, but I do have something planned for next chapter.
Funny fact, when I came up with writing the atomic bomb part, me and my dad were watching "Oppenheimer" (2023) on TV.
