Chapter 16
Here it is, chapter 16! Hope you enjoy it!
Flasheart walked through a hanger up to the ship, in his suit, when he heard footsteps approaching. So he looked leftwards to see Hotspur run up to him, wearing a suit of his own. He came upon Flasheart and panted a bit. "Brother, I want to come with you." He panted, which confused Flasheart. "You do?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "Yes. You move about in your sleep, thinking about something. You've not been yourself since these missions started. You keep going out there for a long time. I believe it's for a reason. So I want to see what keeps drawing you out there." Hotspur explained. "But you're my brother, moreover, the youngest of our pack. If anything were to happen..." Flasheart began to warm, but Hotspur interrupted him. "The pack doesn't need our leadership yet. Besides, they approved my opinion on your findings this mission. And I'm sure you can look after me, brother." Hotspur insisted, indicted there was some pressure for him to come along. Flasheart started at him for a few seconds in silence, looking down at the floor as he thought about it before he looked back at his brother and nodded. "Over the years, I'd come to regret that decision." Hotspur got on the ship with Flasheart, and they went faster than light to Earth, Hotspur surprised at how much it was like their homeworld as he gazed upon it for the first time.
Flasheart landed the ship by the farm, pointing the front away from the farmhouse, so as to hopefully buy some time to explain the situation to Jessica and Steven. Hotspur got up from his chair and looked through the viewpoint with confusion as Flasheart shut down the main systems. "Hey, from the way you've been acting, I was expecting more than just greenery." He said in disappointment. "Hey, we've only just arrived, so be patient, Hotspur. Please wait here for a few minutes whilst I go and scout ahead, make sure the perimeter is safe." Flasheart spoke as he got up out of his seat and made for the left hand side door. "Wait! Don't you need a mask?" Hotspur yelled out, frantically, his eyes and mouth wide open with fear, so Flasheart looked over his right shoulder. "Don't worry. The air is breathable. Takes a bit to get used to, but not that bad." Flasheart said with a reassuring smile before he suddenly then opened the door, the hissing of air flowing through the ears and Hotspur held his nose with his left hand, his mouth slammed shut. Flasheart laughed at this sight as he moved through the doorway and stepped down onto the ground. Once he was out of sight, Hotspur then dived down to the side of the console, opened a small hatch and pulled out a mask, getting it over his massless as quickly as he could and gasped for air. Inside the farmhouse hallway, Flasheart stood before Jessica and Steven, greeting them with a calm but tense voice and expression. "Now, I don't know how to explain this to you, but..." He began to explain nervously, when the unlocked door suddenly opened and then he heard his brothers voice as he looked over his right shoulder in a flash to see Hotspur standing in the doorway with a mask over the top of his muzzle. "Hey, Flasheart what is this place...?" He asked as he laid eyes on Jessica and Steven, these two Fangen creatures standing behind his brother. He let out a scream, Jessica and Steven also screaming too, before he then charged at them, running past Flasheart, his reflexes not fast enough to stop him due to nerves as he came upon Steven and swiped his right arm/hand at him, only for Steven to grab it with both hands, stopping it, before Hotspur when withdrew it and grabbed Steven's shoulders with his hands, pushing him backwards. Steven got over the shock after a seconds, grabbed Hotspur's forearms and got a grip with his legs, using his strength to stop Hotspur moving him, the two then straining as they both tried to get the best of each other.
"Stop it! Stop it!" Jessica yelled out as she ran behind Hotspur, came up to his back, held her arms up at his shoulders, grabbed them, wrestled them for a few seconds, but he ignored her, before she then moved her arms forwards and tried grasping at his muzzle. After waving her arms at his muzzle several times, she grasped his mask, and pulled it off his muzzle, causing him gasp and to let go of Steven. Steven stopped his effort as he then stood still, watching Hotspur hyperventilate. Flasheart, who had been standing still all this time, watching them fight it out, came up to Jessica's right, as Hotspur knelt down on his knees, his hands on his throat, gasping fast with wide eyes. After a few more seconds of frantic breathing, it then slowed and calmed down. Then he closed his mouth before he sniffed his nose a few times, reasliding he was feeling any pain in his body from the foreign athmosphere. "The air is... breathable?" He asked, his eyes widening as he realised his voice was high pitched. "What?" He spoke, still high pitched. Steven held his left hand up to his mouth, barely struggling to contain his laughter. "What is happening to me?" Hotspur yelled out, his voice turning back to normal in the last two words. "Your just adapting to the air, brother. See? It's not that bad." Flasheart spoke as he came upon Hotspur as he got up on his feet, giving him an offended look.
After that, Flasheart brought Jessica and Steven up to speed with Hotspur, who wasn't that apologetic to them as they were to him. Inside, he believed those two Fangen weren't worth the effort of coming back several times. Flasheart decided to show him some of what he'd learned about Humans and Earth. Showing books, Hotspur quickly getting interested in history. The next day he began showing him around the farm, but wasn't really happy about being out in the fields, him being a Weren from a highly respected pack. "Hey, part of the job, brother." Flasheart said back to him with a smile. Hotspur rolled his eyes, but chose to suck it up and did his best to help him that afternoon. Later, they came back into the farmhouse, heard what sounded like the TV, so they walked into the lounge to see Jessica and Steven sitting on the sofa, their eyes fixed on the TV, showing a high skyscraper with a hole in it, smoke pouring out of it, then showed the tower fall down into the ground. "Yes, I was here when 9/11 happened." Flasheart and Hotspur started at the TV, Flasheart a look of shock, Hotspur looking like he'd learned himself massive. Over the next few days, as Jessica and Steven thought heavily about what would happen over the coming days, Flasheart getting interested on the worries about humanity too, Hotspur intensified his reading, especially on human warfare, with an interest in the Second World War.
After a few more days, Flasheart and Hotspur left Earth for home, Hotspur comfortable with leaving, feeling he'd learned enough. A few days later, Flasheart left, leaving Hotspur home, as he'd chosen to stay at home, despite Flasheart asking him. When he arrived back on Earth, he came into the lounge to see Jessica and Steven sitting on the sofa, both of them looking very sad at each other. "What's the matter? Something bad happened again?" Flasheart asked, causing them both to look at him. "Dad's got cancer." Jessica said, tears on her cheeks. "Cancer?" Flasheart asked, narrowing his eyes in concern, sensing it was something serious. "Diseased cells in a lump. A tumour." Steven explained as he took out a sheet of paper with his right hand and held it out to Flasheart. Flasheart took them with his left hand, walked into the kitchen, sat down at the table and read it thoroughly. And pretty soon, he understood what happening. And just as quickly, he made a decision. "These two have helped me so much over my visits. So I decided to help them back." Flasheart ran out to the barn, cleared out a space in the corner, organised some spare tables in the area, took out some of the scientific devices, a black box with curved edges in the ship, set them up on the tables, connected it with the white boxy computer they had in the house, (which he took out and into the barn), managing to connect the two computers, despite their two different technologies, and set them up to do the work he was thinking of. Jessica provided him with Petri dishes, vials and pipettes she had from work, and a swivel chair. He brought into the house a scanner, told Steven to keep still in his armchair, scanned him, and detected the tumour. He then took a prick of Stevens blood. He placed the blood sample into a Petri dish with a pipette, placed the dish into a hole in the machine, the dishing being lowered into the box. Using the information from the scanner, and the analysis, he tried find out a mean to deal with the problem.
2 days went by without any luck. Flasheart began working himself out in the barn, only coming into the farmhouse for sleep and meals, looking at his computer, anxious to find something, anything, with his Weren technology. He then got a prick of his own blood, bleed it into two Petri dishes, and then with the first one, tried mixing the two bloods together. When he put them into the box, the analysis was unlike anything he'd ever seen before. He then frantically began tying on the computer. He was so focused he barely heard Jessica come up to him, as he then felt her hands rub his shoulders. "Hey. You should get some rest." Jessica spoke from behind him, making him stop tying. "Jessica, I can rest later. I need to look at this. "It's nighttime, in case you haven't noticed." Jessica corrected, causing him to look rightwards to see from the holes in the barn wall that it was dark outside, indicating she was right. He then pointed his head downwards and rubbed his eyes. "Come in and sleep. The research isn't going anywhere. It'll still be here in the morning." She said, causing him to sign and then turned off the computer, got the Petri dish out, mumbling an 'okay, okay.' As he swivelled his chair rightwards and got up, placing the Petri dish on the table side, he walked past the chairs rear towards the barn entrance, Jessica walking on his left.
The next morning, Flasheart returned to the barn and upon gazing at the Petri dish he'd studied during the night, he saw something odd.instead of the blood coloured liquid that filled the bottom of the dish, he saw a small rough ball in the centre of the dish, no bigger than a human fruit called a strawberry, which he had been fed by Jessica during a previous stay. He narrowed his eyes at the changing, looking at the other dish, seeing just the blood. He heard footsteps, looked leftwards to see Jessica come up to him. "Hey. Just checking. Anything new?" She asked as she came up to his rear left. "Yes. Look at this. Last night, this was a spoonful on blood. This morning, this." He explained as he took the dish with the ball in it with his left hand, held it up for her to see. She narrowed her eyes at it, leaned down to it, looking closer. "Looks like a...seed." She suggested. Flasheart placed it in the machine, and typed for a second on the computer. "Yes. It's the seed of a plant." Flasheart said, looking at the analysis. "What plant?" Jessica asked, speaking for them both as Flasheart typed again. "Unknown." He replied. Then he took the dish out of the dish, placed it on the table and stared down at the seed. Jessica leaned over his left shoulder, unknowingly dipped her left hand into the second Petri dish, causing her to jolt, removing her hand into a way that caused the dish to fall down onto the ground, breaking it into break up into pieces, the blood spilling onto the floor. Flasheart saw the dish fall, but didn't react fast enough, so he stared at the wreckage and let out a groan. "Sorry." Jessica said. Flasheart shook his head. "It's ok. Yelling out isn't going to help your father. I can get more blood. However, what are we going to do with this seed? Let him eat it?" He then asked as they both looked at the seed. "I guess most seeds exist to be planted?" Jessica shrugged. "And so that's what we did." They both got a flowerpot from the other side of the garage, filled it with soil and put the seed in it. Jessica gave it some water from the watering can, the same thought on their minds. They both wanted to help Steven, so much they'd do anything, both had hope, and weren't sure if this little unknown seed would even do anything. But they both knew it was, a long, crazy shot, but still better than their so far nothing.
