Chapter 4

Lena got home later than she meant to.

The house was dark and quiet when she stepped inside, the familiar stillness wrapping around her like a pause she hadn't earned yet. She set her keys down, slipped off her shoes, and leaned briefly against the door just long enough to exhale.

The drive back replayed itself in fragments.

The way Miu had gone quiet in the passenger seat.
The way she'd hesitated before opening the car door.
The look they'd shared, brief, careful, unfinished.

Lena rubbed her face with both hands, then reached for her phone without thinking.

She stared at the screen for a moment, thumb hovering.

Hey, I'm home safe already :)

She erased the smiley face.  Too homey.

Thanks for tonight.

Too vague.

She sighed softly, then typed again.

Lena:
Home safe. Hope you got some rest.

The message sent with a soft sound that felt louder than it should have.

She placed the phone face down on the counter, as if distance might quiet the thoughts crowding her mind.

This is professional, she reminded herself.
This is manageable.

But her chest felt tight in a way she hadn't expected, not excitement, not fear.

Something slower.

Miu was already in bed when her phone lit up.

She picked it up immediately, then frowned at herself for it.

Lena:
Home safe. Hope you got some rest.

Miu stared at the message, heart doing something unnecessarily complicated.

She typed back.

Miu:
Just got in. Thank you again for the ride. I really love being your passenger.

Her hands moved faster than her mind did and click sent.

Shit. Why did I say it like that.

She placed the phone on her bedside table, turned onto her side, and stared at the wall.

Her boyfriend would be home late. The apartment was quiet.

And yet, her thoughts were loud.

This doesn't mean anything, she told herself.
It's just comfort. Familiarity.

But when she finally drifted off, Lena's voice, calm, steady. Lingered longer than it should have.

****

Miu noticed it the next morning. Not in a dramatic way, just in the small things.

She reached for her phone out of habit, then stopped. There was nothing she needed to say. Nothing that hadn't already been said.

Still, Lena's name sat near the top of her messages.

At the studio later that day, everything looked the same. Same lights. Same set. Same schedule taped to the wall.

But when Lena walked in, Miu felt it, the awareness, the quiet shift in the air.

"Good morning," Lena said easily.

"Morning, P'Lena."

They stood a little farther apart than usual.

Not because either of them wanted to.

But because they both noticed the distance.

"So, you like being my passenger princess, huh?" Lena joked, trying to cut the tension between them

Miu's face suddenly became a tomato and hid behind her hands.

"P'Lena, no! Stop teasing, I didn't mean it like that," Miu said half laughing, half nervous.

"Relax, kiddo. I was just trying to make you laugh, and it worked." Lena smiled sheepishly, tongue struck out as if teasing Miu even more.

Kiddo

That word made Miu's stomach flipped and it didn't help how cute Lena looks right now. Being so carefree, fun, and unrestrained. It did wonders to Miu's heart and she didn't like it...not one bit.

She's slowly blurring the lines between workmate and something more.

****

Lena tried to understand it.

She'd worked with many co-stars before, close scenes, long days, blurred lines. She knew the rhythm of it. She knew how to separate herself when filming ended.

So why did this feel different?

She found herself noticing Miu in moments that had nothing to do with the script, the way she concentrated when listening, the way she smiled when she thought no one was looking.

She's taken, Lena reminded herself.
You're being careful.

And she was.

But careful didn't mean unaffected.

Miu, on the other hand, felt like she was constantly adjusting, stepping back when she wanted to step closer, reminding herself of things she shouldn't forget.

Her boyfriend texted during lunch.

Still filming?

She replied yes, then added a heart out of habit.

It didn't feel dishonest.

But it didn't quiet her chest either.

****

By midday, the set had settled into its usual rhythm. Cameras repositioned. Crew members moved with practiced ease. Dialogue echoed, repeated, refined.

Miu was adjusting her costume when her phone vibrated in her pocket.

She glanced at the screen and felt her chest tighten.

Tan:
I'm nearby. Thought I'd bring food. Are you free?

Her first instinct was hesitation.

She looked up instinctively, eyes finding Lena across the set. Lena was in conversation with the director, posture relaxed, expression attentive.

Why does this feel like something I need to brace for? Miu wondered.

Miu:
I'm filming, but you can come by. We're on break in a bit.

She sent the message, then immediately felt something settle uncomfortably in her chest.

Tan arrived just before lunch.

He carried two paper bags, smiling easily as he scanned the set until he found her.

"Miu," he called softly.

She turned, relief and something else mixing in her expression. "You didn't have to."

"I wanted to," he said, handing her the bags. "You've been busy."

A few heads turned.

Including Lena's.

Miu felt it instantly, the awareness, the fear that Lena would see this moment and feel something because of it.

Why would she? Miu scolded herself.

And yet.

"This is my boyfriend," Miu said when Lena approached a few moments later, voice carefully steady. "Tan."

Lena stopped, just for a fraction of a second.

Then she smiled.

"Hi," she said easily. "Long time."

Tan blinked, surprised then laughed softly. "Yeah. It's been a while."

Miu's brows furrowed. "You know each other?"

"Through friends," Lena said. "A while back."

"Didn't expect to run into you like this," Tan added. "Looks like you're doing well."

"Same to you," Lena replied. Her tone was warm. Polite. Controlled.

Too controlled.

Miu noticed it, the way Lena's shoulders stayed relaxed, the way nothing about her expression betrayed what Miu suddenly feared might be there.

Miu hated that fear.

She hated that she felt the need to protect Lena from something Lena had never asked for.

Tan handed Miu a drink, brushing her fingers lightly as he did.

Miu flinched, not visibly, but internally.

She glanced at Lena.

Lena was already looking away.

They ate together during the break.

Tan chatted easily, asking about filming, teasing Miu lightly about her long hours. Miu responded, smiling, nodding, doing everything right.

And still, she felt off-balance.

She was acutely aware of Lena's presence just a few steps away, speaking quietly with a crew member, giving them space.

She doesn't need space, Miu thought.
Why am I thinking like this?

When Tan stood to leave, he squeezed Miu's shoulder gently. "Don't work too hard."

"I won't," she said.

After he left, the set felt different.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Lena didn't say anything.

She didn't need to.

But something inside her had tightened quick and unwelcome when she'd seen Tan step close, when she'd watched Miu instinctively soften around him.

This is normal, she told herself.
This is her life.

She respected it.

She respected him.

Still, the feeling lingered, dull, restrained, carefully tucked away.

She exhaled slowly and returned to work.

Professional. Focused.

Unmoved.

At least, that's what she told herself.

****

That evening, the announcement went live.

The official poster dropped first.

Then the teaser.

Names trended within minutes.

Miu sat in the dressing room, scrolling through her phone, heart racing.

THEY LOOK INSANE TOGETHER.
WHO CASTED THIS PAIR??? GIVE THEM A RAISE.
THE CHEMISTRY IS ALREADY THERE.

She laughed softly, overwhelmed. "This is... a lot."

Lena glanced at her screen briefly then looked away. "They're excited."

"More than I expected," Miu admitted.

"So were we," Lena said quietly.

Notifications kept coming.

Praise. Curiosity. Anticipation.

The response was louder, warmer, faster than anyone had prepared for.

The series hadn't even aired yet and already, expectations were forming.

Miu looked up at Lena. "Are you nervous?"

Lena considered the question.

"Not about the work," she said.

Miu nodded.

She understood that answer more than she wanted to.

Around them, the world buzzed with excitement.

Inside, both of them stood very still, holding onto boundaries with both hands, hoping they were strong enough to keep everything else at bay.

They didn't say what the success meant.

They didn't say what it stirred.

But something had started.

And no amount of professionalism could pretend otherwise.

****

That night, Miu lay awake long after the lights were off.

The apartment was familiar,  too familiar. Every corner carrying the weight of routine and comfort. Tan hadn't come home yet. She hadn't checked the time.

She stared at the ceiling, willing her thoughts to slow.

They didn't.

The set.
The way Tan had smiled when he handed her the food.
Lena's voice, calm, steady, unchanged.
The way Lena had looked away first.

It all replayed, uninvited.

Miu turned onto her side, frustration knotting in her chest.

She loved her boyfriend. She was sure of that. He was kind, present, safe, everything she was supposed to want.

So why did her chest tighten when Lena stood too close?

Why had she been afraid. Afraid  that Lena might see her with Tan and feel something because of it?

The thought unsettled her.

This isn't what this is, she told herself.
This can't be.

But denial didn't quiet the feeling.

Because whatever Lena stirred in her wasn't loud or reckless. It was subtle. Disruptive in its restraint.

Something that lived in pauses. In looks that lasted half a second too long. In comfort that felt earned too quickly.

Miu squeezed her eyes shut.

She didn't want to name it.

Didn't want to admit that something new was forming alongside something she already cherished.

Didn't want to accept that feelings didn't always arrive with permission.

She exhaled shakily, pressing her palm against her chest as if that might steady it.

Tomorrow, she would go back to set.
Tomorrow, she would be careful.
Tomorrow, she would push this down.

Because acknowledging it felt like crossing a line she wasn't ready to face.

And somewhere across the city, Lena was doing the same thing, though neither of them knew it yet.
