Chapter 5

The teaser changed everything.

It was only a minute long. Carefully edited. Soft music. Lingering shots that hinted more than they revealed.

But it was enough.

Within hours, Miu felt the shift. Not on set. Not in Lena's presence. But in the way the world seemed to tilt slightly toward them.

Her phone buzzed constantly. Notifications stacked faster than she could open them. Mentions. Tags. Messages from friends she had not spoken to in months. She sat in the dressing room scrolling absently while a stylist adjusted her hair, her chest tightening with every swipe.

Fan videos appeared first.

Short clips slowed down to half speed. Zoomed in glances. Fingers brushing during rehearsals. Lena's hand hovering near her waist without touching. Miu leaning in unconsciously when Lena spoke.

Captions dissected every movement.

Every look.

Every breath.

This is not acting.
Tell me why Lena looks at Miu like that.
You cannot fake comfort like this.

Miu locked her phone and set it face down.

Her reflection stared back at her in the mirror. Calm. Put together. Professional.

Inside she felt unsteady.

On set, the exposure followed them.

Crew members teased lightly. Nothing cruel. Just knowing smiles. Side glances when Lena and Miu stood too close during breaks. Someone joking that they did not even need direction anymore.

The studio noticed too.

Promotions increased quietly at first. More behind the scenes footage. More joint interviews. Paired photoshoots instead of solo ones.

The strategy was clear. Build familiarity. Build attachment. Let the audience believe before the story even aired.

And somehow, without meaning to, Lena and Miu made it easy.

They sat closer during interviews. Shared water bottles. Finished each other's sentences without thinking.

No one told them to. No one needed to.

It felt natural in a way that unsettled Miu when she stopped to think about it.

She did not remember when Lena's presence became something she reached for instinctively. When her body angled toward her without permission from her mind.

She only noticed it when fans pointed it out first.

Lena noticed too.

She caught herself waiting for Miu before leaving set. Slowing her steps unconsciously so they walked out together. Reaching for Miu's sleeve when she laughed too hard and leaned away.

She told herself it was chemistry. Good work ethic. Comfort built through shared hours and trust.

But sometimes, late at night, she replayed moments she had no reason to remember.

Miu's laugh when she forgot herself.
The way her eyes softened when she was tired.
How easily she fit into Lena's space.

Lena pushed those thoughts aside.

She had done this before. She knew the difference.

Or at least she thought she did.

****

Tan remained steady through it all.

He watched the teaser. Smiled proudly. Shared it with friends. He celebrated Miu's growing success without hesitation.

Without jealousy.

But he noticed the distance.

Not physical. Emotional.

She was present when they spoke. Attentive. Warm.

But sometimes her gaze drifted. Her responses delayed just a second longer than usual.

He did not accuse. Instead, he planned something.

The restaurant was elegant and quiet. Candlelight reflecting softly against polished glass. A place meant for moments that mattered.

Miu arrived surprised.

"This is too much," she said softly, eyes shining.

"It's a celebration," Tan replied. "You deserve it."

She did. And she knew it.

Dinner was slow and thoughtful. Stories shared. Laughter returned easily. Tan reached across the table and took her hand.

"I'm proud of you," he said simply.

Something inside Miu softened painfully.

She smiled. Squeezed his fingers. Let herself feel the warmth of being known.

She posted a photo later. Just the table. The candle. A corner of her glass visible. Nothing more.

Still, it did not take long.

Comments flooded in within minutes.

Is that Lena.
This looks like a date.
They went out after filming.
They are so private but so loud.

Miu stared at her screen, heart racing.

Lena saw it too.

She recognized the restaurant immediately. Scrolled through the comments once. Twice.

Then she closed the app.

She did not comment. Did not react. Did not allow herself to linger.

Respect was a line she would not cross.

Even when something inside her tightened sharply at the thought of Miu across a candlelit table with someone else.

***

That night, Miu sat beside Tan on the couch, phone abandoned on the coffee table.

"I need to tell you something," she said quietly.

Tan turned toward her fully.

She explained slowly. The GL community. The expectations. The way fans blurred reality. The intensity of projection. How speculation became belief.

She spoke carefully. Honestly.

"I don't even know if I can fall through with all of it," she admitted. "Sometimes it's overwhelming."

Tan listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he nodded.

"I trust you," he said simply. "And I trust your intentions."

Relief flooded her chest.

"I'm not hiding anything," she said quickly. "I just don't want this to hurt anyone."

"It won't," Tan replied gently. "We'll handle it together."

There was no resentment in his voice. No accusation.

Only understanding.

Miu leaned into him, grateful. Ashamed. Confused.

Because even as she reassured him, Lena's name surfaced unbidden in her mind.

****

On set the next day, Lena and Miu were closer than ever.

They did not notice when it happened. Only that it did.

They shared inside jokes. Whispered during retakes. Lena brushed lint off Miu's sleeve without thinking.

Fans captured everything.

Fan edits grew bolder. Slower. More intimate.

The studio leaned into it. More content. More exposure. More moments that allowed audiences to believe.

And Lena and Miu let it happen.

Not because they were trying.

But because pretending distance felt harder than closeness now.

Neither of them said it. But both of them felt it.

Something was growing in the space they kept insisting was safe.

Something quiet. Persistent.

And no amount of understanding, professionalism, or goodwill could make it disappear.

Only delay it.

****

The director brought it up casually.

"Let's do a joint live," she said during a production meeting, tone light but intentional. "Fans want interaction. Something simple. No script. Just be yourselves."

Miu's stomach tightened.

Lena remained outwardly calm, nodding once. "Okay."

They did not look at each other.

The TikTok live went up that evening.

A phone mounted on a stand. Soft studio lighting. No makeup touchups beyond the basics.

Just the two of them sitting side by side on a couch that suddenly felt too small.

"Hi," Miu said, smiling into the camera. "We're live."

The comments exploded instantly.

Hearts flooded the screen. Names trended. Messages scrolled faster than Miu could read.

THEY'RE TOGETHER.
THE VISUALS ARE CRAZY.
WHY DO THEY LOOK SO COMFORTABLE.

Lena leaned closer slightly so they both fit in frame. Her knee brushed Miu's.

Neither of them moved away.

They answered questions easily. About filming. About their characters. About working together.

Miu laughed when Lena teased her gently about forgetting lines. Lena smiled when Miu finished her thoughts without realizing it.

At one point, Miu read a comment out loud without thinking.

"You two look so natural together," she said, then froze.

Lena glanced at her.

Then at the camera.

"We're comfortable," Lena said simply. "That helps."

The chat went wild.

Miu felt heat creep up her neck.

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, only to realize Lena had done the same thing for her at the exact same moment.

Fans noticed.

Clips would be made later. Slowed down. Paused. Zoomed in.

But in that moment, it felt effortless.

Real.

Too real.

After the live ended, the room felt strangely quiet.

Miu exhaled first. "That was... intense."

Lena laughed softly. "They're enthusiastic."

Miu nodded, but her pulse had not slowed.

"You okay?" Lena asked, voice low.

"Yeah," Miu said automatically. Then more honestly, "I think so."

They sat there for a moment longer than necessary.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them acknowledged how close they were still sitting.

Eventually, Lena stood. Professional instinct kicking back in. "We should rest. Tomorrow's call time is early."

Miu nodded again. "Right."

As they walked out separately, Miu's phone buzzed.

Clips from the live were already circulating.

Fans dissecting every glance. Every laugh. Every shared breath.

She closed the app.

Across the city, Lena did the same.

And both of them felt it.

That they had crossed nothing.

And yet something had undeniably shifted.
